Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment

In 2011, Pennsylvania's trucking industry provided 276,120 jobs or one out of 17 in the state. Pennsylvania's total trucking industry wages paid in 2011 exceeded $12.7 billion, with an average annual trucking industry salary of $46,116. In May 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States reported that truck drivers, heavy and light tractor-trailer, delivery drivers, held 106,890 jobs with a base annual salary of $36,935.

Small Business Emphasis

In 2012, Pennsylvania had over 21,530 small and locally owned trucking companies served by a wide range of both large and small supporting businesses.

Transportation of Essential Products

Over 88 percent of Pennsylvania communities move their goods using trucks. Trucks transported the state's 86 percent of total manufactured tonnage in 2010 or 1,150,214 tons per day.

Trucking Pays the Freight

As an Industry

In 2009, Pennsylvania's trucking industry paid approximately $1.5 billion in federal and state roadway taxes. The industry paid 37 percent of all taxes owed by Pennsylvania motorists, despite trucks representing only 11 percent of the state's vehicle miles traveled.

Individual Companies

In January 2013, a typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination paid $7,811 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes. These taxes were over and above the standard taxes paid by Pennsylvania businesses.

Roadway Use

In 2008, motorists traveled for 108 billion miles, and the truckers for 11.7 billion miles on 121,771 miles of public roads of Pennsylvania.

HVUT is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax collected annually on heavy vehicles which are operated on public highways at registered gross weights equal to 55,000 pounds or more.
